Kalgoorlie Primary School is proud to offer Wangkatja language education as part of its strong commitment to cultural inclusion and respect for Aboriginal heritage. Learning Wangkatja provides students with meaningful opportunities to develop understanding and respect for Aboriginal histories, cultures, and languages, while strengthening connections to the local community.
Wangkatja is taught to students in Years 1 to 6 and plays an important role in supporting cultural awareness and reconciliation. Through language learning, students gain insight into local traditions, stories, and ways of knowing, helping them to build a deeper appreciation of the rich cultural identity of the region.
The program is led by Mr Troy Rundle, who has completed his Aboriginal languages teacher training and delivers engaging and culturally responsive Wangkatja lessons. His teaching supports students to build connections with the Wongutha people, the original custodians of the land, and highlights the importance of preserving and valuing local Aboriginal languages.
Through Wangkatja language education, Kalgoorlie Primary School continues to celebrate diversity, share knowledge, and foster respect for Aboriginal culture, ensuring students develop understanding, empathy, and a strong sense of place.
