Mathematics

At Kalgoorlie Primary School, we believe every child can thrive in mathematics when they are supported with high quality instruction, clear learning pathways, and opportunities to build confidence through success. Our mathematics program is designed to provide strong foundations while nurturing curiosity, problem solving, and a genuine enjoyment of learning.

In 2026, our early years classrooms from Kindergarten to Year 2 implement the Explicit Maths Program, which is grounded in explicit direct instruction. This structured and highly effective approach supports students to develop deep number sense and essential mathematical skills through clear, purposeful teaching and carefully sequenced lessons. Guided practice and hands on learning reinforce understanding and build mastery, ensuring our youngest learners grow into confident and capable mathematicians from the very beginning of their schooling journey. The Explicit Maths Program is also used as a targeted intervention for students from Pre Primary to Year 2, providing additional support for learners who require further consolidation of key number concepts and foundational skills.

From Years 3 to 6, students learn through Oxford Mathematics, a comprehensive program aligned with the Australian Curriculum. This program provides rich tasks, real world applications, and thoughtfully scaffolded lessons that support all learners while also encouraging them to extend their thinking. Students are empowered to apply their knowledge, reason mathematically, and tackle increasingly complex problems with confidence.

Across all year levels, our commitment is to ensure every student experiences success in mathematics. We prioritise evidence based teaching, consistent instructional practices, and strong foundations for future learning within a positive and inclusive environment. Through this approach, students develop as capable thinkers and problem solvers, building the skills and confidence needed for lifelong learning.
