At Kalgoorlie Primary School, our science program is designed to spark curiosity, encourage questioning, and develop a strong understanding of the world around us. Science learning aligns with the Western Australian Curriculum and provides students with engaging, hands on experiences that build knowledge, skills, and scientific thinking.
Science is delivered by our specialist science teacher, Bek Normington, who brings a wealth of experience from more than ten years of teaching high school science. Bek’s extensive subject knowledge and engaging teaching style inspire curiosity and foster a love of science in students. Learning is made both meaningful and enjoyable through purposeful lessons, hands on investigations, and interactive experiments that encourage students to explore scientific concepts in depth.
Across all year levels, students are supported to think and work like scientists by asking questions, making predictions, planning and conducting investigations, analysing results, and communicating their findings. This approach develops critical and creative thinking skills while building confidence and curiosity. Students are encouraged to make connections between scientific concepts and real world applications, strengthening their understanding of how science impacts everyday life.
Science learning at Kalgoorlie Primary School is further enhanced through rich STEM opportunities. In 2026, our Year 6 students participated in the Synergy Schools Solar Car Challenge as part of their learning about electricity, energy, and engineering. Students designed, built, and refined solar powered cars before competing against schools from across the Goldfields region. Demonstrating outstanding teamwork, persistence, and problem solving skills, Kalgoorlie Primary School achieved first place at the interschool event, earning the title of Goldfields Solar Champions. This success reflects the high quality teaching, strong student engagement, and practical application of science learning across the school.
Through our science program, Kalgoorlie Primary School empowers students to explore, question, and innovate, building strong foundations for future learning and enabling students to approach the world with curiosity, confidence, and a scientific mindset.
