At Kalgoorlie Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every student develops strong literacy skills. To achieve this, we implement daily literacy reviews across the school, providing students with opportunities for spaced, interleaved, and retrieval practice. This consistent approach helps reinforce learning and improve retention.
In Kindergarten, we use PreLit and Heggerty as our early literacy preparation programs, laying a solid foundation for reading and writing. As students progress to Pre-primary through Year 2, we continue with InitiaLit and Heggerty, ensuring a seamless transition and continued development of literacy skills. For students in Years 3 to 6, we introduce Words Their Way to extend their spelling and morphemic knowledge.
Our literacy curriculum is further enriched by Core Knowledge Units and The Writing Revolution, which are used throughout the school to build students’ background knowledge, aid comprehension, and enhance vocabulary during reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities.
To support students who need additional help, we provide targeted literacy intervention programs. Language Lift is implemented in Pre-primary, MiniLit Sage in Years 1 and 2, and MacqLit in Years 3 to 6, ensuring that all students receive the support they need to succeed.
We dedicate a two-hour English block each day to focus intensively on literacy skills, aiming to ensure that every student leaves Year 6 with the ability to read proficiently. Our comprehensive and structured approach to literacy education reflects our commitment to fostering a love for reading and writing in all our students.
